Lane Rhodes threw a complete game for the Quakers to get his second league win of the year and extend the Salem win streak to 5 in a row. Rhodes gave up 7 hits and struck out 6 Alliance hitters and got some big defensive plays behind him to earn the victory.
Alliance stand out Pitcher Gavin Bruni went 5 innings and gave up 0 hits striking out 8. He exited with the lead and the Quakers quickly took advantage of his absence on the mound scoring two runs in the 6th to take the lead.
Freshman shortstop Carson Rhodes led off the inning with a walk. Junior Blaize Exline followed with a bunt to move the runner over but reached base on an error on the 1st basemen. Another bunt by junior Darius Beck moved the runners to 2nd and third with one out. After Lane Rhodes popped out for the second out, sophomore Gavin Wilms fouled off 3 straight pitches with two strikes before hitting a 2 out 2 run double that would give the Quakers the lead.
Rhodes got into a little trouble in the 7th when he walked the leadoff hitter but got a huge strikeout on the next batter and when the runner at first tried to advance on the pitch that was in the dirt, he was promptly erased from the base paths by Beck the catcher who threw him out at second. Another walk and a single followed before Rhodes finally got the last hitter to ground weakly to third basemen who stepped on the bag to end the game.
The Quakers are now 5-1 on the year, 3-0 in the league and will host this same Aviators team at Ray Reasbeck field tomorrow at 5 o’clock.
