Salem ran their record to 9-2 on the season with the 3-1 win over Harding in the second game of the doubleheader. The 9 wins matches how many games the Quakers won in all of 2017. It also raised their Saturday record to 12-0 the past three seasons. If any teams on our remaining schedule want to move the games to a Saturday – let us know! Before the games today a few ladies told the others to just pretend we are still in Tennessee and by their play I believe it worked. It probably helped with the weather being similar.
Bailee Thorn led off the game ripping a first pitch double. Taylor Thorpe’s rbi double scored Bailee for the games first run. Harding would answer in the bottom of the first knotting the game at 1-1. Brooke Veglia scored in the 4th and Elly “Zipline” Exline scored in the 5th on Alyssa Laubacher’s rbi single. Elly had two stolen bases in the game. Jessica Slocum kept a hot bat with two more hits. Freshmen Hannah “Peanut” Kelm reached base in all three at bats with two hits.
The game ended on a sliding catch in left by Sydney Kline halting any attempt at a Harding comeback. Hayden Carner has been nursing multiple injuries but caught 4 games in past 3 days. She made a diving catch on a bunt attempt in the 4th inning. Hayden has played great at the catchers position and keeps with “Carner” toughness.
Taylor Thorpe got the win pitching 4 innings, allowing 2 hits and 4ks. Bailee Thorn got the save in relief with 3 shutout innings striking out 6. Bailee shut the door and had some knee buckling changeups added in.
Donalson and Schuller each had two hits for Warren.
Salem is home Monday vs Canton South in a makeup game.
