Alliance High School
Junior pitcher Johnny McCoy leads Salem to first tournament win in a while.
Alliance scored a run in the third inning after a leadoff walk, a passed ball and a base hit gave the Aviators the lead.
Salem would come right back in the top of the 4th to tie up when a single by sophomore Bryce Owen was followed by a double by senior Jerod Carner.
That’s the way it would stay until the 7th inning. Junior Braydon Gibson led off with a double into the left centerfield gap. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and would score the go ahead run on a single by senior Logan Wilms. Wilms would advance to third on a fielder’s choice and would later score on a sacrifice squeeze by sophomore Shawn Chappell. 2 errors would lead to 2 more Quaker runs and McCoy would take care of the rest.
The left hander gave up 5 hits and 6 walks but struck out 6 Alliance batters and got timeley outs including a double play and a pick off to help get the win.
The Quakers will play at Canfield tomorrow in second round tournament action at 4:30.
Salem is now 9-12 on the year and 3-8 in the NBC
